Becoming a Career Coach

The Path to Purpose

Sarah’s career began in Corporate Communications within the petrochemical sector. Since her company’s structure didn’t include a dedicated communications department, she was placed within the HR function. This piqued her interest in human capital management and shaped her entire career trajectory.

That exposure sparked a deep interest in human capital management, prompting me to pursue formal studies in Human Resource Management while working full-time.

From there, she took on specialised HR roles in organisations within the Oil and Gas industry. These experiences gave her a holistic understanding of workforce planning, industrial relations, and talent management. She took particular interest in aligning organisational goals with individual potential.

But at the heart of it all was her love of writing and storytelling.

Even in my corporate role, I found joy in helping others articulate their narratives—whether through speeches, bios, or portfolios.

Turning a Gift into a Calling

For years, Sarah was the go-to person for résumés and interview prep. She did it quietly and often for free…until she realised she had a real gift for blending strategy, creativity, and her HR insights to transform career documents into powerful brand statements.

Her ‘aha’ moment came when she noticed there was a demand for personalised career branding in a way that AI simply couldn’t replicate.

While digital tools and AI can generate résumés, they cannot replicate the human touch needed to tell a person’s authentic story.

That insight transformed a side passion into Recruitment Ready TT.

The Realities of Business

Sarah is currently undergoing a brand pivot to realign her business to reflect the essence of her mission and the personal stories that fuel it.

However, in the early days of entrepreneurship, like so many new business owners, she realised that transitioning from employee to business owner required a new mindset.

The greatest adjustment was recognising the direct correlation between effort and outcome—if I didn’t put in the work, there were no results.

Balancing her consultancy with her full-time corporate role meant she had to master time management and efficiency. But the challenges weren’t just logistical, they were also personal.

The fear of self-doubt has always been present. Having big dreams for your business often invites equally big moments of second-guessing. What has helped me is reframing fear into faith.

Like many professionals going beyond their corporate roles, she had to build new skills from scratch:

Coming from HR and Communications, I initially lacked exposure to financial management and the operational mechanics of running a business. Concepts like cash flow management, taxation, and long-term budgeting were not skills I used daily in corporate life, so I had to actively upskill myself in those areas to ensure Recruitment Ready TT could be both impactful and sustainable.

The Branding Lesson

From the beginning, Sarah knew her work was about more than résumés. Her first tagline, “Becoming Ready to Be Recruited”, reflected her HR roots and the belief that hiring the right person at the right time is the key to success.

However, she acknowledges that there were missteps while trying to build her brand.

I underestimated the importance of investing early in branding and marketing. Initially, I focused heavily on service delivery and client results, but I didn’t prioritise building a strong, authentic brand identity. Looking back, I would have dedicated more time to defining my brand voice, refining my messaging, and ensuring my visual identity matched my professional ethos.

Despite this, the impact of her services resonated with her clients:

It was often the raw, heartfelt text messages—the excited “I got the job!” notes—that carried the most weight with prospective clients. Those authentic expressions of gratitude demonstrated the real impact of my services and created powerful social proof.

Consistency also played a major role in building her brand. She shared insights, posted success stories, and positioned herself as both a strategist and a partner. Over time, this established her as a trusted voice in career development.

Redefining Expertise

Sarah initially had doubts about her entrepreneurial journey as a consultant in the HR industry:

I questioned whether people would take me seriously given my academic background in Communications rather than HR.

However, her client success rate quickly shifted that belief:

The consistent 95%+ success rate of my clients in landing roles reminded me that results speak louder than credentials. That affirmation allowed me to move from doubt to conviction.

Stepping into entrepreneurship led Sarah to redefine how she saw herself.

I had to let go of the belief that influence and credibility are only validated by degrees or titles. My shift came when I realised that it was my cross-industry experience, practical knowledge, and ability to translate those insights into actionable strategies that truly differentiated me.

Now, even when things get tough, Sarah grounds herself in her purpose.

I coached a client through a career transition after her role was made redundant. Even though I was unwell, I committed to a three-hour session. Within a week, she landed an interview and a new role. Witnessing those transformations keeps me energised.

Embracing the Lifestyle Shift

For Sarah, entrepreneurship isn’t just a career. It’s a lifestyle shift that changed her perspective on accountability.

In corporate life, accountability is external; in entrepreneurship, accountability is entirely internal. It can be isolating, as your vision may not always be understood by others, but it is your responsibility to steward it forward.

Sarah’s story is proof that becoming The Expert Entrepreneur means more than leveraging skills. It requires you to embrace fear, show up authentically, and build a brand that tells a powerful story.

Key Takeaways from Sarah’s Journey

Sarah’s journey offers practical wisdom for professionals ready to take the leap into entrepreneurship:

  • Credibility comes from impact, not titles. In many cases, real-world results and expertise matter more than formal credentials.
  • Entrepreneurship demands self-discipline. Moving from employee to business owner requires you to take full responsibility for your outcomes.
  • Invest early in branding. A strong, consistent brand presence is just as vital as great service delivery.
  • Let client results speak as your strongest proof. Client success stories can become powerful testimonials that attract more opportunities.
